Can Continue New Game Plus on Grounded
So, you've completed the game; well done! If you're going for the platinum, however, there's still much work to be done. The Last of Us offers players a New Game+ Mode which unlocks after completing the game for the first time. The game is exactly the same in New Game+ mode as it is in normal play, except you keep all your skill and weapon upgrades, as well as unused parts and supplements. You also keep all Training Manuals and collectibles (some will still show up in the game). The weapons themselves, however, do not carry over; you still have to find them in the game as you come to them.
If you're following this guide, we assume you played through the game on Easy. You unlock New Game+ Mode ONLY for the difficulty level(s) you've beating. In our case, we completed the game on Easy, so we only have access to Easy - New Game+. Playing through the game on Easy - New Game+ should be a cinch due to knowledge you've gained from your first playthrough as well as the fact that you are much more upgraded now. You could easily complete a New Game+ rather quickly since you don't have to worry about collectibles. However, to earn the platinum, you're going to have to complete a Survivor - New Game+ at some point. So does that mean you have to complete a playthrough of the game on Survivor first? Well... officially, yes. But there is a workaround!
The New Game+ Workaround
To unlock New Game+ for higher difficulties without first completing a normal playthrough on the higher difficulties, follow the steps below.
- Once you've completed the game, you'll eventually return to the main menu after the credits.
- Choose "CONTINUE NEW GAME PLUS".
- Choose the highest difficulty you have available (if you played through on Easy, it will be the only option available).
- Complete Chapter 1 of the game, Hometown.
- When you first gain control of Joel at the very beginning of Chapter 2, The Quarantine Zone, exit the game and return to the main menu.
- Choose "CHAPTERS".
- Choose "Hometown".
- Choose "Prologue".
- Select SURVIVOR difficulty (if your goal is to stop at the platinum trophy) or GROUNDED difficulty (if you want to go for the extra Grounded Mode trophies as well as the platinum).
- Save your game and play all the way through the game on the selected difficulty level and watch the end credits. All trophies should unlock by the time you return to the main menu.
Using the above workaround, you can earn every single normal and New Game+ trophy in the game in two playthroughs, even if your first playthrough was on Easy mode.
And, if you played the game through on Grounded Mode+, you'll earn...
So let's talk a little bit about Grounded Mode. Grounded Mode was added to the game as a free DLC to add more challenge. Grounded Mode is basically Survivor difficulty but slightly more mean.
First off, ammunition, crafting items, supplements, and parts are all incredibly scarce. Even items behind shiv doors are reduced somewhat. This makes inventory and ammunition management a must. Don't waste Molotovs and nail bombs on single targets (except Bloaters, of course). Headshots are also much more important than on easier difficulties as that greatly reduces ammunition usage. There are moments in the game where you have no choice but to use weapons, of course, but if you can use stealth in a certain situation, definitely use it!
Speaking of stealth; stealth is an absolute MUST on Grounded Mode. Enemies can kill you in as little as two pistol hits, so even single enemies can cause an unfortunate game over. Staying in stealth as much as possible ensures you aren't overwhelmed by a bunch of enemies all at once, plus anytime the enemy isn't shooting or attacking you instantly reduces risk. The Grounded Mode playthrough will definitely take some time to complete due to the number of times you might die and reset an area, as well as the amount of time you'll be spending in a crouched position.
You should also make use of the bottle/brick functionality. Tossing a brick at an approaching human or Runner will cause them to stumble, allowing you to run up to them and kill them up close. This saves you countless amounts of ammunition, especially because bottles and bricks are as prevalent on Grounded Mode as they are on other difficulty levels.
The bottom line when dealing with Grounded Mode is this: it's going to take some time and it's going to take some trial and error. Work through the game as best you can and if you run into a trouble area that you just can't seem to pass, step away from the game for a while or go play some multiplayer, then come back. Stay patient and stay persistent and you'll get through it!
Finally, let's discuss the two trophies related to upgrading your skills and weapons. The 'Everything we've been through' trophy requires you to fully upgrade all of Joel's skills through supplements. If you are searching most rooms and area you come to, you will probably unlock this trophy about halfway through your second playthrough. It cannot be unlocked in a single playthrough as there are not enough supplements in the game to fully upgrade Joel. Just remember to start a New Game+, because if you start a normal game, your stats will NOT carry over. Once you get the last upgrade, you'll unlock...
The 'For emergencies only' trophy functions similarly, but it's a little bit trickier. First, you can only upgrade at workstations, so you can't just upgrade whenever you want. Second, you can only upgrade weapons once you've collected them, meaning weapons you don't find until much later in the game have to wait to be upgraded. Finally, if your New Game+ playthrough is on a high difficulty level, there MIGHT not be enough parts to upgrade even after two playthroughs, so you may have to start a third.
Because of that last issue, you may want to avoid upgrading any weapons until you find the flamethrower. Once you find the flamethrower, start upgrading the weapons from last found to earliest found. This is because, if you DO have to go into a third playthrough, you don't have to proceed all the way through the game again to finish upgrading the later weapons if they're already maxed out. When you have finally made the last upgrade, you'll unlock...
When you've got all the trophies the single-player mode has to offer, it's time to work on the multiplayer. Head to the next page for information and tips regarding all things The Last of Us multiplayer.
